I received an email alert from domaintools.com (that service is no longer available) letting me know that the owner has not renewed the domain name and if they don’t renew it will expire soon, not hitting the auction block yet.
During my research, I noticed that the domain was owned by a local realtor who seemed to be retired. So, using domaintools whois I was able to retrieve the owners’ phone # and reached out.
It is hard to explain to the person why I want the domain name, of course, I can’t tell them that I want to buy it so I can flip it later 10 times fold. But I wasn’t far from the truth by saying I’m a lead generation company looking to acquire and develop a site to sell these leads to real estate agents, similar to what Zillow is doing, but then of course I would play down my theory saying its hard to compete with companies like Zillow, Realtor.com, Redfin.com, and others to keep my offer low and acceptable.
After back and forth we agreed to $1500 and that’s how much we paid for the domain name. At first, we agreed to $1000 but later she said that my offer was a good start where I specifically remember her telling me ok set up the escrow.com transaction. I later upped my offer by $500, to me, it was still worth the investment. Not sure where it would close on Namejet but I felt okay paying $1500 for the domain name.
